What is the Academic English course’s aim?
The Academic English course includes a series of modules that will help you improve your use of the English language for academic purposes and develop the skills necessary to easily tackle challenges such as delivering presentations and writing essays, assignments, and articles.
The preparation lasts 4 weeks, and you can choose between attending one or two two-hour lessons per week.
Each week focuses on a different unit. More specifically:
Week 1:
- Overview of academic writing conventions
- Understanding the structure of scientific papers
- Importance of clarity, precision, and formality in scientific communication
Week 2:
- Effective strategies for literature review
- Proper citation and referencing in scientific papers
- Using academic databases and resources
Week 3:
- Introduction to IMRAD (Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion) structure
- Crafting a compelling introduction and problem statement
- Methods section: Describing research design and procedures
- Results and Discussion: Analyzing and interpreting findings
Week 4:
- Editing and proofreading techniques for academic writing
- Incorporating feedback and peer review
- Tips for creating visually appealing and informative figures and tables
Moreover, every week your progress is assessed through quizzes designed to enhance your academic writing skills. Written assignments focus on writing academic/scientific articles. In addition, you will participate in peer-reviewed exercises, evaluated by your fellow students. Finally, you will take part in a 30-minute seminar on the use of specialized citation tools and Q&A sessions on dealing with certain writing challenges. The Academic English course material includes a handbook on academic writing, samples of scientific articles for analysis, access to academic journals, databases, and bibliography style guides (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago).
