Applying to Dutch universities

The first step in the application process is registering your personal details via the Studielink website (https://www.studielink.nl/). Subsequently, you submit your application directly to the university of your choice, providing the necessary personal details and uploading all relevant documents. The majority of Dutch universities accept students on a rolling admissions basis, meaning that each application is examined upon submission without there being an overall deadline for the application process. This explains why an early application, namely in the period between December and February, increases your chances of being admitted, since study places fill up gradually.

Keep in mind that, because it is compulsory to have all necessary documents when applying – these include a translated transcript of your grades; IELTS, GMAT, or GRE results; a CV, recommendation letters, and a personal statement – it is important that you begin preparing 3-4 months prior to submitting your application.

Mandatory requirements

The criteria regarding the test results necessary to be admitted to a graduate program in the Netherlands vary depending on the program and university you are applying to. However, some exam results are commonly required as part of an application to a program in a specific field. They are the following:

• IELTS (International English Language Testing System): It is usually required as a certification of your knowledge of the English language. Many universities require a minimum score on the IELTS to admit a student.
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Another test that assesses your knowledge of the English language, which is also considered adequate by many universities.
• GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination): Certain programs, especially in the fields of Business Administration and the Sciences, may require that you take one of those tests, which are undoubtedly assets for your application.

It is important to double check the specific requirements of the program you are interested in applying to on the university’s website or by contacting the Admissions Office to ask for further information. Please note that some study programs also take into consideration other aspects of your application, such as relevant prior work experience.

Tuition fees and living expenses

Tuition fees in the Netherlands vary depending on the study program and the university. Tuition fees for Greek students are approximately €2,000 per year. However, it is possible to apply for a scholarship to the Dutch state or to institutions affiliated with the university; it is also possible to receive student financial aid. The Education Executive Agency (DUO) and the Huurtoeslag are two well-known government grants for students.

The average cost of living very much depends on location and lifestyle. Generally, living expenses are about €800-1,200 per month, which includes daily expenses, housing, food, transport, and other expenses. Cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht can prove to be more expensive than other areas. However, it’s good to know that Holland offers numerous opportunities for part-time student jobs, which go a long way to covering living expenses.
